News Item

Labour International secretary Lorraine Hardy was one of three international guest speakers at Alfaz PSOE International Seminar held in the town’s Casa de Cultura last Saturday. The seminar came at the end of a week of cultural activity aimed at cementing relationships between the local Spanish and the many European and other expat communities in the town and surrounding area. The seminar was hosted by Alfaz socialist mayor, Vicente Arques. International speakers, included Hans Olof Svedbergh, General Secretary of the expat Norwegian Labour Party branch and Arnaud Leroy, one of the recently elected deputies representing French expats (Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Monaco) in the French National Assembly. Keynote speaker was Elena Valenciano, Vice Secretary General of PSOE, number two in the Party hierarchy after Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba. Secretary General of the Valencian Region, PSPV-PSOE, Ximo Puig also addressed the meeting. Alfaz PSOE is reaching out to left and centre-left expats from Germany, Rumania and, of course, the Latin American community. Lorraine Hardy said after the meeting “The seminar was a significant step forward in bringing together expat socialist and social democratic parties on the Costa Blanca with PSOE members. It is essential to build a centre-left opposition to the unnecessary austerity measures forced on Europe by the right wing Cameron-Sarkozy-Merkel bloc which is causing so much hardship in Spain, Greece and elsewhere. The recent election of Franšois Hollande in France is the beginning of the campaign to shift Europe to the left by the time of the European Elections in 2014.”
